With consummate ease Rob Peeters (Telenet/Fidea) rode clear of all opposition last Sunday to the win the Rutland International CiCLE Classic ‘Cross ; the sixth and final round of the British Cycling National Trophy series held at Whitwell Leisure Park on the shores of Rutland Water.
After several weeks of the course being laden with heavy slow, the weather cleared dramatically 24 hours before the event to provide glorious Winter sunshine for each of the five races which made up the day of exciting cross country cycling action.
With each of the early races going to the script written during the previous five rounds with all the leaders holding on to their positions by winning their respective races. The only exception to this being Annie Last of Derbyshire, who although winning the women’s race at Rutland, but only contested two rounds finished the series well down the overall standings.
All attention was focused however on the last race of the day in which seven top Belgian riders were to tale part. They did not disappoint. From the start Ken van Copernolle (Sunweb/Projob) went clear of the madlt chasing field of nearly 100 riders. He was soon joined by race favourite Rob Peeters (Telenet/Fidea) and although at various stages during the race several ridsers made contact with these two, the result was never in doubt as van Copernolle and Peeters rode with ease where most others were forced to run.
Behind these two the battle for the lesser places was however hotly contested between the current top British ‘crossers Paul Oldham (hope Racing) and National Champion Jody Crawforth( Arctic Racing) and two more Belgiand Jan van Dael (Sunweb/Projob) and Ben Berden (Musseuw). The scrap between the two British riders was of significant importance as a poor prerformance by Oldham could have theoretically given the overall series title to Crawforth. In the event however, Crawforth suffered a fall when he tangled with a course marking post allowing Oldham to draw clear. Whilst this was happening the two Belgian rider similarly drew clear to fight out the third and fourth places. Meanwhile at the front Peeters continued to ‘play’ with van Copernolle, and with just over half a lap of the 2.7 kms course to go, finally put on the pressure for a final time to cross the finish line five seconds ahead of his compatriot. Berden finished third and van Dael fourth, with Oldham leading the remainder home in fith spot with Crawforth just behind. All the Belgian visitors finished in the top nine, emphasing that countries current dominance of the cyclo-cross scene, with Leicerstershire’s Dan Booth riding home to a creditable tenth place.
Interviewed immediately after his win, Peeters had no hesitation in praising the Rutland course as one of the best he had ridden this season, and even suggesting that the venue, course, and organisation were worthy of a World Cup level event.
Speaking after the event, Race Director Colin Clews said,” On the Friday evening prior to the race we were still concerned that heavy ice and snow on the start and finish loop road may have necessitated a late course modification, but overnight the situation changed completely with a general thaw which was unbelievable. Amongst our organisation team we could only say that it was the ‘luck’ of the CiCLE Classic once again that held good! Everyone seemed delighted with the event, and a good crowd came out on the sunny day to enjoy excellent racing and the best day of the Winter at the lovely venue at Whitwell provided by Anglian Water. We now hope to speak to Anglian about the development of the event to an even higher standard and status. Rutland County Council who sponsored the event were also pleased with the event and the economic impact from an event of this type at an otherwise quiet time of the year for tourism.”
The event received additional sponsorship from the East Midlands Development Agency, MARS (UK) under their ‘Dolmio’ brand; Tim Norton Motor Services, extreme mountain clothing manufacturer Dare2b, and Melton Hire Centre.
